The original Elham bakery in the Square, shown here in the 1950s and run by Mr Cook.

The property has been recently restored and is shown here on the left of this picture, next to the Old School House.

This building with the sun shades in the High Street was the most recent bakery that provided bread and cakes, not only for the villages and businesses in the Elham Valley but as far as shops in Canterbury.

Evans Tea Room was situated in the single storey room on the right had side of the bakery, it also extended into the rear garden as can be seen by the post card below.

When we moved to the village in 1986 the Bakery was run by David Addington and I have fond memories of driving home from work in the early hours of the morning, with the smells of freshly baked produce wafting down the valley.

After Mr. Addington closed the business the property was used by Carol Creese as a shop front for her house clearance business, following that it was used as a co-operative of local antique dealers and Elham Antiques. During this time the extensive property was divided and converted into holiday accommodation. The old delivery van garage was knocked down and Lavender House was built on the site where a cottage once stood. The cottage is just visible behind the tree in the above picture.

Lavender House and the old bakery which was until recently the site of the Blue Vinny Restaurant, sadly now closed
