St. Mary's Ukulele Group A UKULELE Group for Elham

SMUG

Take a couple of teachers, a dancer, a lawyer, a school boy, a dentist and a few more, add eighteen ukuleles and stir, or rather strum vigorously for an hour and a half and what do you get?

Gales of laughter and the St. Mary's Ukulele Group.

On Friday 9th September 2011 SMUG had it's inaugural meeting in St. Mary's Church. Some had played for a year or so and some had never played a ukulele before. With Janice Cooper's tuition (and sometimes with the aid of a backing tape) we were playing and singing a variety of songs at a reasonable speed by the end of the evening.

The ukulele looks like a small guitar but has only 4 strings memorably tuned to " My dog has fleas" (GCEA). Gradually a store of chords is learned and a large number of songs can be played with only 3 chords.

Do come and join us. It is not necessary to read music only to enjoy making music with friends. We meet on the first and third Mondays 7.30-9.00 pm. Bring a music stand if you have one.

Warning to the rest of you: we are now taking bookings!
